The Social Security Administration (SSA) has recently added 13 new conditions to its Compassionate Allowances (CAL) list, which will enable more people to access disability benefits more quickly. There have been updates to how Social Security handles overpayments. The newest change, effective April 25, 2025, sets the default withholding for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) to 50% of a person's benefit to repay an overpayment. Social Security (SSA) announced it will increase the default overpayment withholding rate for Social Security beneficiaries to 100% of a person’s monthly benefit. This change applies to new overpayments related to Social Security benefits. The withholding rate for current beneficiaries with an overpayment before March 27 will not change and no action is required.
